JUDr. Giskra Karl [ Notable personality ]

Von (1820-1879), Austrian liberal politician, since 1861 member of the Moravian Parliament and Imperial Council. Heavy adversary of all that was Czech, he was famous for example for declaring the St. Wenceslas’ crown a mystification. As the Minister of the Interior (1868-1870) he worked, prejudiced, for destroying the Czech opposition, which despised him. The opposition reproached him for immorality in the financial matters. Giskra was famous for defending "gratuity money”, called the "Trinkgeldtheory”, according to which, as alleged by Giskra at law, it does not matter if the "gratuity” (commission) is given to a waiter or a managing director as an intermediary of economic transactions. For this "diligence” Giskra was banned from the court in 1875. A year later, however, this measure was cancelled and during the first audience the emperor spoke to him "nice like never before”, according to Giskra’s words. By contrast, he was very popular with the German bourgeois. He appears in the electoral list of 1870 as honorary citizen of the city of Šumperk.
