ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK THEATRE [ Theatre ]

- Formerly the National Theatre of Moravia and Silesia, the theatre is a Neo-Baroque building dating from 1906-7 (built according to plans by the Viennese architect Alexander Graf). From 1945-46 the building underwent reconstruction, and between 1954 and 1956 it was largely rebuilt (by the architect Jan Tymich). The next reconstruction and extension (led by the architect Ivo Klimeš) took place from 1969-71. The facade is Classicist, with a relief decoration of tympanum by Antonín Ivanský and Karel Vávra. The auditorium, foyer and hallway were designed by the Viennese firm of Johann Bock and Son, and the foyer contains the busts of distinguished personalities (including E. Bastl, J. Myron, V. Jiříkovský and J. Vogel); the ceiling painting in the auditorium is by Eduard Veit (Vienna).
